Thursday, February 06, 2014 More Supports for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder Ontario Committed to Helping Every Student Succeed February 6, 2014 12:14 p.m. Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Ontario is providing more supports to help students with autism spectrum disorder apply for and succeed in postsecondary education. Two new pilot projects at York University and Algonquin College will begin supporting high school students with autism spectrum disorder as they prepare for college or university. Students will get help building the skills they need through a variety of resources, activities and programs, such as: •An intensive summer program on campus and in residence to help with orientation •Workshops for students on how to manage time and deal with the responsibilities of student life •New online resources, teaching strategies and workshops to help faculty identify the needs of students with autism spectrum disorder and better prepare them for college or university A new accessible website, created with input from students with disabilities -- transitionresourceguide.ca -- will also make it easier to research colleges and universities and the services they provide. Giving every student the tools they need to succeed is part of the Ontario government's economic plan to invest in people, build modern infrastructure, and support a dynamic and innovative business climate. Quick Facts •York University will be working with the Toronto District School Board and the York Catholic District School Board and Algonquin College will be partnering with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. •Colleges and universities reported more than 1,200 students with autism spectrum disorder received supports and services in 2012-13. •Ontario is investing $1.5 million over three years to help students with disabilities transition to postsecondary institutions.
