Encouraging Ontario Seniors to be Prepared

Ontario Marks 18th Annual Emergency Preparedness Week

Ontario is marking Emergency Preparedness Week by highlighting the importance of seniors being prepared for emergencies.

While everyone in Ontario is encouraged to take action to prepare themselves and their families, seniors can be especially vulnerable during an emergency. In collaboration with the Ontario Seniors' Secretariat, Emergency Management Ontario (EMO) has developed resources for seniors and their families to ensure they are prepared in the event of an emergency. Seniors are encouraged to make an emergency plan and prepare an emergency survival kit.

Seniors are also encouraged to sign up for Ontario's emergency alerts. These alerts are sent to all subscribers when a significant emergency has occurred and typically include information on how to stay safe during an emergency.

Helping seniors stay safe is a part of Ontario's Action Plan for Seniors and supports the new Ontario government's efforts to ensure a just and fair society for all.

Quick Facts

•A 2012 survey by CARP of its online members showed that 55 per cent feel they are not well prepared for a disaster. (CARP is a national, non-profit organization interested in the issues of ageing in Canada).
•By 2017, for the first time, Ontario will be home to more people over 65 than children under 15.
•Ontario’s emergency alerts are broadcast via email, twitter, the EMO website, radio and television, online media and other channels.
•National Emergency Preparedness Week takes place from May 5-11, 2013.
